Explainer / Messiah

2 Peter 1:1

Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Yeshua Messiah, to those who have obtained a like precious faith with us in the righteousness of our God and the Savior Yeshua Messiah:

… ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν καὶ σωτῆρος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ.

Greek
What we did

We kept the ASV's wording, in modern English, including its "the" before "Savior": "our God and the Savior Yeshua Messiah."

Why

  1. The Greek

τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν καὶ σωτῆρος is "of the God of us and Savior": one article (τοῦ) before "God," and none before "Savior."

  2. The supplied word

The second "the" is supplied in English, as the ASV supplied it.

    More

It has no separate word behind it in the Greek. Without it, the phrase reads "our God and Savior Yeshua Messiah."

  3. The next verse

names the two with different wording: ἐν ἐπιγνώσει τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν, "in the knowledge of God and of Yeshua our Lord" (1:2).

  4. The same construction with "Lord."

The letter uses the same pattern, one article over two nouns joined by καί, in "our Lord and Savior Yeshua Messiah" (1:11; 2:20; 3:18).

    More

It is the same construction as Titus 2:13.
