1Woe to the bloody city! it is all full of lies and plunder; the prey does not depart. 2The noise of the whip, and the noise of the rattling of wheels, and prancing horses, and bounding chariots, 3the horseman mounting, and the flashing sword, and the glittering spear, and a multitude of slain, and a great heap of corpses, and there is no end of the bodies; they stumble upon their bodies;— 4because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the beautiful prostitute, the mistress of witchcrafts, who sells nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts. 5Behold, I am against you, says Yehovah of hosts, and I will uncover your skirts upon your face; and I will show the nations your nakedness, and the kingdoms your shame. 6And I will cast abominable filth upon you, and make you vile, and will set you as a spectacle. 7And it shall come to pass, that all those who look upon you shall flee from you, and say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? where shall I seek comforters for you? 8Are you better than No-amon, which was situated among the rivers, which had the waters all around her; whose rampart was the sea, and her wall was of the sea? 9Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and it was infinite; Put and Lubim were your helpers. 10Yet she was carried away, she went into captivity; her young children also were dashed in pieces at the head of all the streets; and they cast lots for her honorable men, and all her great men were bound in chains. 11You also shall be drunk; you shall be hidden; you also shall seek a stronghold because of the enemy. 12All your fortresses shall be like fig trees with the first ripe figs: if they are shaken, they fall into the mouth of the eater. 13Behold, your people in the midst of you are women; the gates of your land are set wide open to your enemies: the fire has devoured your bars. 14Draw water for the siege; strengthen your fortresses; go into the clay, and tread the mortar; make strong the brick kiln. 15There the fire shall devour you; the sword shall cut you off; it shall devour you like the creeping locust: make yourself many as the creeping locust; make yourself many as the locust. 16You have multiplied your merchants above the stars of heaven: the creeping locust ravages, and flies away. 17Your princes are as the locusts, and your marshals as the swarms of grasshoppers, which encamp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun arises they flee away, and their place is not known where they are. 18Your shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria; your nobles are at rest; your people are scattered upon the mountains, and there is no one to gather them. 19There is no relief for your hurt; your wound is grievous: all who hear the report of you clap their hands over you; for upon whom has your wickedness not passed continually?
