Why this word
Single-verse decisions that are not tied to one Greek or Hebrew word study.
- Deuteronomy 6:4
God is one YehovahGod, Yehovah is oneHear, O Israel: Yehovah our God, Yehovah is one:
Why
The Hebrew has no verb: 'Yehovah our God Yehovah one'. Rendered with the same wording as Mark 12:29 in this version. The ASV has 'Yehovah our God is one Yehovah'.
- Mark 7:19
This he said, making all meats clean—cleansing all foodsbecause it does not go into his heart, but into his belly, and goes out into the latrine? —cleansing all foods.
Why
The ASV supplied 'This he said' (printed in italics in the ASV); it is not in the Greek, which ends καθαρίζων πάντα τὰ βρώματα, 'cleansing all foods'. This version prints only what the Greek has.
- John 8:5
lawTorahNow in the Torah Moses commanded us to stone such: what then do you say of her?
Why
John 7:53-8:11 is not in the earliest manuscripts (P66, P75, Sinaiticus, Vaticanus) or the SBLGNT, so there was no Greek word to study here; 'Torah' is used for consistency with the rest of John.
